Middelburg, a charming farming and industrial town located on the beautiful banks of the Klein Olifants River in the Mpumalanga province of South Africa, is a fantastic tourist destination, offering satisfied guests everything from endlessly interesting cultural attractions to exciting water sports to captivating game viewing.
Initially planned as the halfway stop between Pretoria and Lydenburg in 1859, it took a few years for the town to take root. It was only in 1864 when the Dutch Reformed Church purchased the Sterkfontein farm that the town, then called Nazareth, started to develop. By 1866 it was officially regarded as a town and in 1872 its name was changed to Middelburg to reflect its position as the halfway point between Pretoria and Lydenburg.
Today, the town of Middelburg is the stainless steel capital of the continent and a major agricultural, commercial, and industrial centre for the large coal mining region in which the town is situated. Although Middelburg has expanded rapidly over the years it still manages to maintain its quaint small town charm, and its moderate climate and stunning surrounding landscape make it a must on any visit to the breathtaking Mpumalanga province.
