Colesberg, a unique Karoo town, halfway between Cape Town and Johannesburg on the N1, is a popular stopover for travellers en route. It was founded in 1830 and named after the Governer of the Cape Colony.
Hanover, a small town founded in 1854, is also found in the Karoo. This town is the most central between South Africa's major cities, being roughly the same distance from Cape Town, Johannesburg, Durban, Port Elizabeth and Upington.
The Karoo with it's small, isolated villages, has a distinct architecture and its imposing churches rest in valleys between desolate, flat-topped koppies.
