This region is also known as the “Energy Belt” of South Africa as it houses a number of power stations that supply energy to most southern African countries.
It is the centre of crude oil production in southern Africa and is the only place in the world where petrol is made out of coal for use on a commercial basis. The region is also home to the biggest underground coal mining complex on earth.
Sasol Synfuels near Secunda is the biggest factory site in the world and Cosmos Country is the only place in the world where coal and gold are mined at the same place at the same time.
Despite the heavy industrial and agricultural activity, the open grasslands have a natural beauty, especially during summer, when Cosmos Country explodes into vivid colour as the pretty pink and white cosmos flowers bloom.
Towns of this region include Secunda, Delmas, Leandra, Bethal, Standerton, Balfour and Greylingstad.
