ACCOMMODATION IN OUDTSHOORN
Some magnificent sandstone mansions, dubbed feather palaces, are testimony to the profitability of ostrich farming in the 19th Century. Oudtshoorn is still the epicentre of ostrich farming, with a number of show farms and shops selling ostrich products. The enormous limestone Cango Caves are close to the town. The steep and twisty Swartberg Pass, which separates the Little Karoo from the Great Karoo, is one of Bain’s real masterpieces, and it is still standing pretty much as he built it.
