ACCOMMODATION IN MAFIKENG
Mmabatho is one of those towns that doesn’t really exist any more, and oughtn’t to have existed in the first place. It was created in 1977 and plonked right down next to Mafikeng (then Mafeking) to function as the capital of the newly independent Bantustan of Bophuthatswana. It has since sort of been reabsorbed into Mafikeng, which is actually quite a pleasant town with a long and interesting history. Visit the Mafikeng Museum, as much for the attractive Victorian-era building, which was once the town hall, as for the exhibits, and a wonder through the numerous graveyards is enlightening. The Mafikeng Game Reserve offers open space, scenery, birds and animals.
