ACCOMMODATION IN LICHTENBURG
Home to the iconic and somewhat controversial Boer War General Koos De la Rey, Lichtenberg is a pleasant town with willow-lined streets and some unusual attractions. De la Rey’s grave and a huge equestrian statue attract pilgrims, a nearby peat bog burns spontaneously, pigmy hippos, mohr gazelles and addaxes are bred on a farm nearby, and South Africa’s deepest sinkhole, Wondergat, is close by. The Diggers Museum commemorates one of the biggest diamond rushes in history when, in 1926, thousands of men literally ran to stake claims in what became South Africa’s richest, but short-lived alluvial diamond digging. A few die-hard optimists are still there sifting through the gravel.
