ACCOMMODATION IN MODIMOLLE
When the Voortrekkers came across the stream near this town, they noted that it flowed north and, spotting a pyramid-shaped hill, assumed it was the source of the Nile, so they called it Nylstroom. The nearby 3,795-ha Nylsvlei Nature Reserve is centred on the Nylsvlei, an enormous 1,600-ha flood plain that is fed by rivers streaming off the high-lying Waterberg. It is an absolute birding paradise with about 370 species of birds to be seen in the area, and up to 80,000 birds in residence in a good year. Surrounded by acacia savanna and broad-leaved woodland, the Nylsvlei wetland is a Ramsar-designated site.
