ACCOMMODATION IN PIETERMARITZBURG
The second largest town in the province, Pietermaritzburg is the site of one of the campuses of the University of KwaZulu-Natal. It is a town of pretty red brick Victorian buildings, and the City Hall claims to be the largest brick building in the southern hemisphere. On a trip from Durban to Pretoria in 1893, Mohandas Gandhi was thrown off a train for sitting in a “white” compartment and arrested. He claims his philosophy of Satyagraha dates from this experience. A statue commemorating the event stands in the centre of town in Church Street. Maritzburg is linked with Durban by two iconic races – the Comrades Marathon and the Duzi Canoe Marathon.
