ACCOMMODATION IN WELKOM
This mining town is unusual in that it is one of the very few urban centres in the world that was completely planned out before it was built. Now that could have been disastrous but it seems to work here. The well designed street grid and many traffic circles ensure a good traffic flow and the many open spaces give a soft feel to this unashamedly industrial town. Do a mine tour and watch gold being poured, and visit the Museum of Welkom to find out more about the discovery of gold. Even more interesting, descend 870m into the disused St Helena Mine to see the world’s deepest wine cellar.
