ACCOMMODATION IN SASOLBURG
This town is renowned as the site of South Africa’s ground-breaking liquid fuel from coal programme. It made sense in the 1980s as South Africa is sitting on incredibly large coal reserves, and sorely lacks oil. Of course, now that we know how global climate change works, and what a carbon footprint is, it doesn’t seem quite so clever any more. And, interestingly, the folks of Sasolburg seem to have known that for a while. There is a surprising amount of open space in the town with a large green belt, a small botanical garden and a bird sanctuary. When all the Free State registration numbers started with O, Sasolburg’s was OIL. Cute.
