ACCOMMODATION IN HARRISMITH
Many people who claim to have been to Harrismith haven’t seen any more of the town or its surroundings than the big fuel complexes on the N3. Well, hidden away behind these is a pleasant town with a botanical garden displaying some Drakensberg plants, a small, community-run museum, and numerous interesting old buildings. It’s close to Golden Gate, Sterkfontein Dam and the iconic Platberg, which is the venue of an annual trail running race, the Platberg Marathon. It’s a bit of an uphill slog so it’s not for couch potatoes. The town was named after Sir Harry Smith, who’s kept his wife, Ladysmith, close by just down the N3 in KwaZulu-Natal.
