ACCOMMODATION IN GARIEP DAM
This enormous dam, which was called the Hendrik Verwoerd Dam on its completion in 1971, is a truly remarkable piece of engineering. It is the largest storage dam in South Africa, with a capacity of about five million megalitres and a total surface area of about 370 square kilometres. The imprisoned water is used for irrigation and for electricity generation, with a maximum output of about 360MW. Even more interesting, though, is that it’s part of an interbasin transfer, and water from this dam is pumped for miles under the Zuurberg to the Fish River in the Eastern Cape. It’s a great water sport venue.
