ACCOMMODATION IN EAST LONDON
This pleasantly quiet little city is considered the gateway to the Wild Coast, as it has the closest airport, other than Mthatha. The surfing is great and the beaches are truly wonderful, with pretty little seaside settlements spread out along the coast north and south of the city. It is also relatively close to some great game destinations, as well as to the pretty mountain settlement of Hogsback. The East London Museum was instrumental in identifying the coelacanth, as it was the curator of this establishment who first noticed something unusual and contacted the ichthyologist JLB Smith. East London Harbour, situated on the Buffalo River is the only river port in South Africa.
