The reserve is situated 13km north of Upington (En route to the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park and measures 5641 hectares and derives its name from a prominent steep rocky hill close to the entrance). According to archaeologists Spitskop was formed, by the earth’s crust being eroded away and after many, many years only the harden rock remained based on the fact that it is granite. God’s hand sculptured this beacon from the earth and has been a landmark used by all men since the first nomadic travellers. On a clear day this landmark can be seen from up to 40 km’s away.
Facilities include a swimming pool, 2 thatched lapas, Kiosk, Abundance of birdlife and various game species. There is a telescope on the hill to view wildlife and landscapes, 37km gravel road through the park, 3 hiking trails and a Field Hut with essentials but no electricity.
