GeographyBritstown is situated at a major crossroads - it lies at the junction of the N12 highway from Cape Town to Gauteng, and the N10 from Upington to Port Elizabeth, making it a great stopover if you are travelling along either of these routes. History The town was named after the prominent farmer Hans Brits. After travelling into the interior with the intrepid explorer and missionary David Livingstone, he decided to settle in the area where the town lies today. Originally very secluded and quiet, all this changed when the town became a major thoroughfare to the diamond fields of Kimberley. Today the economy of the town is based mainly on sheep farming. Arts and Culture The traveller interested in the history of the town will find the Britstown Museum at the old Holy Trinity Church in Market Street appealing, while the museum in Richmond Street is dedicated to transport of yesteryear. Science Twenty-five kilometres west of Britstown is the Smartt Syndicate Dam, the largest privately constructed dam in South Africa. The dam, built for irrigation, has a capacity of 95-million m<\#179> and provides water to lucerne and wheat farmers. Entertainment Enjoy soaking up the atmosphere of the town and relax at a pub or restaurant. Visitors can also have a picnic with the family or a loved one, and enjoy the pleasant fresh air at Maritz Dam. There are also some good hiking trails for the visitor who is in a little more energetic mood.Did You KnowBushman Pianos' are found at Keurfontein. These flattish dolomite rock gongs are naturally balanced on three points and were used by the San people in rituals. The 'gongs' were struck and resonated naturally with a clear sound.
