Geography The holiday and health resort of Badplaas lies at the foot of Mpumalanga's Ndlumudlumu Mountains, about 300km east of Johannesburg. It is located along the R38 southwest of Barberton. The town is well located to enjoy an overnight stay if you are planning on taking an alternative route from Gauteng to the Kruger National Park.HistoryThe Swazi people discovered the thermal springs here and named them "eManzana" - "healing waters". After trading with the Swazis, a white hunter, Jacob de Clerq obtained the area surrounding the springs, and proceeded to build a trading store. The waters became highly-regarded for their curative properties, and it wasn't long before Badplaas was synonymous with a health resort. In the late 1890's the Transvaal government took control of the spa, and proceeded to build a resort with facilities, and pumped the water into a series of baths. The resort has been much expanded since then, and is today privately owned. ScienceThe hot sulphurous spring at the foot of the Ndlumudlumu range of hills bubbles out of the ground at 30,000 litres an hour. These healing waters can be enjoyed at numerous pools and baths at the resort. The Emanzana Nature Reserve offers visitors game drives with sightings of white rhino and a variety of antelope. Other activities including horse-riding to many lovely sites and along scenic routes are also very popular. Entertainment Besides relaxing at the hydro, Badplaas offers visitors a host of exciting activities. There are river rides, go-carts, paintball and a supertube at the resort, and outdoor enthusiasts can enjoy leisurely, scenic walks and even try more adventurous activities such as quad biking and other off-road adventures in the nature reserve.Did You Know Sulphur is found in meteorites, volcanoes, hot springs, and in galena, gypsum, Epsom salts, and barite. It is essential to life, and is a minor constituent of fats, body fluids, and skeletal minerals.
