Superior Heritage Accommodation
In his early notes, Sir Frank Reynolds called the residence intended for the Prime Minister, ‘Botha Cottage’. Sir Frank probably used the word ‘cottage’ because General Louis Botha had expressed his wish to build a cottage by the sea. When walking with his dear friend among the rolling grassy hills within Umdoni Park, General Louis Botha requested that Sir Frank keep him a small piece of land on which he could build his wife, Annie, a beach retreat.
Having installed a pump at the golf course dam to supply water to the building contractor drafted to build Botha House, Sir Frank Reynolds notes in his diary on 15th June 1919, “And so the foundations have been started”. Sadly, less then three months after the start of Botha House, and when the walls were only a few feet high, there came news of General Botha’s passing. Sir Franks friend, after whom the house had so affectionately been named, would never see this magnificent Cape Dutch house complete.
Work on the house never faltered and by 15th May 1920, the house was ready to welcome it’s new resident, Mrs Annie Botha. In a specific clause, written within the Trust, which Sir Frank had founded to protect the Umdoni Park, it states:
“To be held and maintained to the use of Annie Botha, widow of the Right Hon. Louis Botha, P.C. during her lifetime. The remainder of Umdoni Park Estate to be held and maintained to the use of the public, subject to rules and regulations governing behaviour, visiting times etc…”
Today, this gracious homestead stands proudly above the warm Indian Ocean as a welcoming guest house. It’s grand appeal as a homestead, it’s 6 luxury suites, it’s rolling lawns and tranquil surroundings make any discerning traveller feel like they can relax and unwind, rejuvenate and re-energise and enjoy all that this part of KwaZulu-Natal has to offer. Sumptuous breakfasts, friendly and inviting staff and the fresh sea breeze, all round off an experience that is truly magical.
