Geography In the upper valley of the Little Caledon River and a few kilometres from Clarens, the Golden Gate National Park is world renowned for its stunning scenery. Hugging the edge of the mountain kingdom of Lesotho, the park covers an area of 11,600ha. Wind and water have wrought and twisted the sandstone into magnificent cliffs which glow blood red and golden at sunset and after rain - a never-to-be-forgotten sight.Science Nature and game lovers are in for a treat while visiting this beautiful part of the eastern Free State. Eland, springbok, grey rhebok, black wildebeest, baboon and many birds - lammergeyers, black eagles, jackal buzzards and rock pigeons can be found within the borders of the Golden Gate National Park.
