Geography

Frankfort lies on the banks of the Wilge River along the R26 from the town of Reitz.

History

The town was originally laid out on the farm Roodepoort and named Frankfurt after the German town by Albert van Gordon in 1886. At some later stage the 'o' replaced the 'u' and the town became known as Frankfort.

Arts and Culture

Evidence of prehistoric man living in the area has been found and examples of this include the ruins of stone dwellings dating from this period. An interesting cultural site is the old clock in the fa<\#231>ade of the Dutch Reformed Church, which survived when the building was burnt down by the British in 1901.

Science

The town lies in the heart of the country's maize growing area. Other farming that takes place in the area includes dairy, beef, wool and mutton.

Popcorn is an ancient type of corn, and it is water inside the kernel that, when heated turns into vapour, causing internal pressure and finally the breaking open of the shell. The inside of the kernel literally gets turned inside out by steam pressure.
