Geography

Situated about 140km north of Cape Town in the Sandveld, the wheat and sheep farming centre of Hopefield lies on the banks of the Sout River, midway between Malmesbury and Vredenburg.

History

Hopefield owes its origins to a Dutch Reformed parish founded there in 1844. In 1852 two officials from Cape Town, Messrs Hope and Field, surveyed the first residential stands and the new village that was developed there was subsequently named after them.

Science

The area boasts some 500 species of fynbos and other plant types, and in spring has lovely displays of wild flowers. Thirteen kilometres to the southwest of Hopefield there are fossil deposits that were found on the farm Elandsfontein. Most noteworthy was the discovery of early hominid skull fragments bearing a marked resemblance to Neanderthal Man. The important hominid was named Hopefield Man, and sometimes is also known as Saldanha Man. An interesting fossil display can also be seen at the Tourism Bureau.
