Geography

Just under two hours' drive north of Cape Town along the N7, Citrusdal beckons with a sense of adventure. This 'Gateway to the Cederberg' with its floral splendour of Namaqualand, lies nestled amid fragrant citrus orchards at the foot of the majestic Cederberg Mountains. Meandering through and sustaining this magnificent fertile valley, is the Olifants River, the lifeblood of the area's world-renowned citrus industry.

Science

As the name indicates, Citrusdal is the hub of one of the largest citrus industries in southern Africa. The oldest orange tree in the country, found on the Hexrivier farm, is a provincial heritage site that incredibly still bears fruit. The Olifants River Valley is renowned for its wines, many of which may be tasted and purchased at Citrusdal Cellars. In August and Spetember, the museum hosts the annual Fynbos Enviro - a display combining the cultural heritage with the natural resources of the area. Be sure to visit the Tourism Bureau at the Sandveld-Huisie for specialist information on the Cederberg Wilderness area.
