Geography

Riebeek Valley incorporates the towns of Riebeek West and Riebeek Kasteel, and is just a 60 minute drive from Cape Town.

History

Discovered by Van Riebeek's men and cultivated in one way or another since then, Riebeek West was originally an important vegetable growing area. It became part of the district of the Swartland congregation of the Dutch Reformed Church at Malmesbury and only later gained independence.

Arts and Culture

The people of Riebeek Valley are a warm and friendly collection of potters, artists and farmers who will enjoy sharing stories with you over a glass of wine.

Science

Owing to a pleasant Mediterranean climate with hot summers and mild and pleasant winters, Riebeek Valley is ideal to visit at any time of the year. The Kasteelberg is 974m high and has unique flora with a mix of Sandveld (as found nearer the West Coast) and Table Mountain fynbos. The last Renosterbos in existence can be found here.

Entertainment

Visitors can enjoy game drives on nearby farms and nature reserves with great opportunities for birding and game enthusiasts. If you are in pursuit of good food and wine, the local fare can be enjoyed at the restaurants in town.

Jan Smuts, the South African statesman, was born in a whitewashed cottage in Riebeek West in 1870.
