Geography

De Kelders, a coastal town close to Gansbaai, is situated about 155km east of Cape Town. The town's cliffs, famous as being incredible whale watching points, offer views that encompass the whole of Walker Bay, extending from Danger Point through to Hermanus.

History

The town takes its name from a geologically interesting formation of underground caves or "Kelders" (cellars), located here. Although the town is a residential area, it retains an "untouched" feeling, as large-scale tourism developments have yet to spoil its natural grandeur.

Arts and Culture

Of cultural significance are the archaeological findings that have been unearthed in many of the caves in the area. These sites, especially the Klipgat Cave, contain open shell middens, and tidal fish traps that were used by early Homo sapiens, and in fact it is believed that these are the oldest remains of modern man yet to be found.

Science

De Kelders is well known for its cliffs that offer spectacular whale watching opportunities. From June to January each year, the Southern Right Whales migrate through Walker Bay, and call these waters home. It is said that the magnificent creatures venture so close into the coast that you can see the warts on their back with the naked eye! The area is perfect for lovers of natures, and the Walker Bay Nature Reserve, a coastal reserve managed by Cape Nature Conservation that stretches along the coast for about 25km, is delightful.

Entertainment

De Kelders is perfectly suited for an adventurous holiday experience. Here you can explore the caves, do the Duiwelsgat Hiking Trail, mountain bike or do some ocean-going activity. One of the fastest growing adventure activities is shark cage diving, and nearby Gansbaai, known as the Great White Capital, has excursions that last between 3-6 hours. Get up close and personal with these magnificent, but frightening, creatures from the safety of a metal cage. For entertainment on terra firma, De Kelders has a restaurant and bar, and a coffee shop that overlooks the bay.

Did You Know

The Great White is one of the few shark species that can jump fully out of the water while hunting.
